Quod Restaurant and Bar
Accessed through an impressive glass lobby from Oxford’s High Street, Quod opens up in to a huge, breathtaking space, formerly a banking hall. Transformed to its current incarnation by owner Jeremy Mogford, Quod is designed to reflect contemporary trends in a classic way, from the simplicity of the dining room furnishings to the ongoing appeal of the collection of original art works from Gary Hume, Sandra Blow and Craigie Aitchinson. It’s easy to see how Quod has become Oxford’s most successful restaurant – the sensibly priced menu is absolutely packed with simple, robust dishes with huge appeal. Not only are the kitchen’s dishes delicious but they have ethical appeal too with many ingredients sourced locally.

Restaurant 66a
Restaurant 66a in Oxford’s Cotswold Lodge Hotel is a prime example of getting it right. The elegant, modern dining room is gracefully fitted into a lovely Georgian building, retaining the authentic fireplace, high ceilings and bay windows, and adding smart wood and brass fittings, luxe carpeting and upholstery and pools of light. The chef employs the freshest seasonal ingredients - some from the owner’s farm - in a menu of modern English and Mediterranean cuisine. In summer, the garden courtyard is the most romantic spot in town for candlit suppers. 66a is ten minutes from town but a world away.

Spice Lounge
Located in trendy Summertown in Oxford, the Spice Lounge is a firm favourite with local curry connoisseurs. The chef is passionate about fresh ingredients and fragrant spices so the food here is packed full of authentic flavours. The menu features classics like lamb bhuna and chicken tikka masala, but we recommend the delicious dishes from the clay oven like succulent tandoori prawns. Why not try one of their signature dishes, like minced lamb curry served as hot as you like. The dining room is sleek and contemporary, with slate floors, subtle lighting and brown leather chairs – perfect for low-key lunches and laid-back dinners with family and friends. In the warmer months, diners can sit outside on the terrace and enjoy an alfresco biryani!

Thai Orchid
Popular with an eclectic Oxford crowd, the Thai Orchid is a Clement Street dining institution. This successful family-run restaurant chain originated in Thailand and was brought to British shores in 1986 by Vichai Kharmakharm, and today Thai Orchid restaurants can be found all over the country. Designed as relaxing Thai 'oases', each dining room is carefully decorated with hand-carved teak furniture, tropical plants and authentic artifacts, but the main star of the show is the moreish Thai Orchid menu. Filled with traditional favourites, the menu includes signature dishes such as the shredded pork marinated in soy, spices and fresh chilli stir-fried with ginger and celery, and the green prawn curry cooked with coconut milk, aubergines and herbs.

The Bat and Ball
Sometimes we stumble across what could only be described as the perfect pub, and The Bat and Ball in Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire, meets most of our 'perfect pub' requirements. This cosy, countryside coaching inn boasts oodles of English eccentricities and the restaurant – decorated with original beams, flagstone floors, a crackling open fire and bare brick walls – is adorned with retro posters and antique cricket memorabilia adding a certain British battiness to the whole mise en scene. Surrounded by Oxfordshire countryside, yet only 5 miles from the Oxford city centre, this is a super place to come for lazy lunches, tasty sharing platters and bottomless bottles of merlot in winter and sneaky al fresco frivolity in summer.

The High Table Bar and Brasserie
What would you expect a restaurant that prides itself on its home made hollandaise sauce, its organic cod with mussel, saffron and cream sauce and foie gras with chicken liver pate to look like? Probably identical to how the restaurant in question does. Ever since the High Table’s owners transformed it in to an up market, bright, spacious feeling restaurant its reputation as a fine place to eat, drink and indulge in thoughtful conversation has been established, furthered by a splendid a la carte wine list and the food of head chef Christopher Bentham, who was trained by and worked for Raymond Blanc. According to reports, he paid particular attention to the Blanc classic of soft centred chocolate fondant with a crunchy coffee ice cream.
