Branca
Oxford’s Branca has been serving up honest Italian food in a stylish environment since 2000 – that’s a lifetime in restaurant terms. Branca’s interior takes its cue from classic Italian designs; Alessi, Gaggia, Ferrari. Combining sleek red leather with dark wood and a little chrome throughout the light and airy bar area and in to the warehouse style restaurant. The modern Italian menu is equally good looking, taking the cuisine a step further than the usual spaghetti Bolognese to bring fresh and exciting flavours from across Italy to the table. Expect to find the likes of Braised Oxtail Ragu with Rigatoni alongside a small but perfectly formed selection of pizzas and risottos.

Café Coco
Named after the clown, not Mademoiselle Chanel, Café Coco is a cosy café-come-cocktail-bar located on the Cowley Road in Oxford famous for its Mediterranean cuisine. With its chocolate box exterior and convivial dining room, Café Coco is famous for having 'the best cappuccinos in Oxford' and locals love the restaurant's posh pizzas, pasta and salads which have been a hit with students and tourists alike for over 16 years. The horseshoe shaped bar is decorated with an ice sculpture of the café's namesake, yet there's no clowning around in Coco's kitchen. Signature dishes include the chorizo, pork and rocket burger; the seared salmon marinated with wasabi and garlic-parsley butter; and the English breakfast pizza.

Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant
You've planned an afternoon punting a la Sebastian Flyte - you've got the boater, the stripy blazer, the wind-up gramophone and the obligatory teddy bear, but whoops, forgotten the picnic. Instead of eating sweaty sandwiches, plan your punting excursion round eating at Cherwell Boathouse. Owned and run by the same family for the past 30 years, Cherwell Boathouse, as its name suggests is right on the banks of the Isis (Oxford speak for the Thames) in a truly scenic spot. The restaurant is small and intimate with a beautiful terrace but not twee. The atmosphere is buzzy and lively and there is a huge range of age groups. However, if you are truly set on a picnic, the restaurant will organise a hamper for a minimum of 15 people if you pre-order. What's cooking: Fish Terrine with a light crab mayo; fragrant Thai broth, crispy sea bream with courgette and carrot tagliatelle on a bed of noodles with a tomato and caper jus; baked breast of mallard with a cranberry compote; white chocolate and ginger torte; chocolate layered crepe cake.

Fire and Stone
Pizza lovers in the Oxford area will already be familiar with this Italian institution on George Street which spans two floors and is famous for its pizza toppings which take you on a journey across the globe from Bombay to Byron Bay. Fire and Stone’s exotic pizza toppings are guaranteed to impress the most adventurous foodies, and the restaurant itself is a grand space decorated with marble floors, plum-coloured walls and plenty of glass, mirrors and bright colours. We prefer the loungey atmosphere of the downstairs dining room which comes complete with a backlit bar and booths – but the whole restaurant is a child-friendly space that is also suitable for business dining and group celebrations.

Restored to all its former glory by owner Jeremy Mogford, Gee’s is quite the landmark, recognisable in its quirky charm, filled with light inside, making the most of the dining room’s collection of original Gary Hume art works. A favourite of Oxford’s great minds – poets, philosophers, artists and dons – Gee’s is the intelligent choice for a faultless dinner in the city of the dreaming spires.

Maxwell's
A long established late night bar and grill in the famous university city of Oxford, Maxwell’s has played its part in fuelling the country’s intelligentsia over the years. A loft-like interior gives the restaurant a cool, laid back feel which is very much in keeping with the winning Maxwell’s formula of dining, drinking and dancing while the menu combines typical American diner food – the Maxwell’s burgers are almost as famous as some of its former regulars – with a touch of British flavour. Talented mixologists with a vey friendly manner man the Maxwell’s bar, serving not only students but local young professionals and sightseers alike, while live music from bands and DJs ensures that you’ll be here long after dinners done.
